You are invited to preview an exciting, new research tool that is being developed to help study potential relationships between breast cancer and environmental pollution on Long Island. See a unique demonstration of this advanced tool, called the geographic information system for health (GIS-H). It is a powerful computer system that can store, manipulate, analyze, and display spatial (geographic location) data and their relationships. Learn firsthand about how the system will work, the environmental exposure and other data that will be included, and the types of studies that may be possible using the system.

Please help spread the word about this preview of the GIS through community groups and newsletters. We can send you promotional flyers if you'd like to distribute them.

For further information or to arrange (by September 6) for special needs, call toll free at: 1-877-GIS-HLTH (1-877-447-4584). You may also wish to visit the GIS-H Web site: http://li-gis.cancer.gov.

The previous day - Tuesday, September 19 - the GIS-H Oversight Committee will meet at the Wyndham Wind Watch Hotel. The public is welcome to attend and observe. To help with our space planning, please call the toll free number above to let us know if you plan to attend. The agenda will be posted on the Web site.

The Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project (LIBCSP) is a multistudy investigation of possible environmental causes of breast cancer on Long Island. Development of the GIS-H is part of the project. The LIBCSP was mandated by Congress in 1993 (Public Law 103-43), and is being directed by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), in collaboration with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), both part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
