New NCI/NIH Funding Opportunities Announced
Cancer epidemiologists may be interested in knowing about the following funding opportunities and Request for Information recently announced by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and National Institutes of Health (NIH):
- Requests for Applications (RFAs) from NCI's Early Detection Research Network (EDRN): The EDRN is a national consortium funded to discover, develop, and validate biomarkers for early cancer detection, risk assessment, and molecular diagnosis and prognosis of early cancer. NCI's Division of Cancer Prevention is soliciting applications for Biomarker Development and Reference Laboratories, Clinical Validation Centers, a Data Management and Coordinating Center, and a Statistics and Biomarker Resource Center. The letters of intent for these RFAs are due by September 29, 2009, and the applications are due by October 29, 2009. More detailed information about the EDRN and these RFAs.
- Program Announcements (PAs) on Diet, Epigenetic Events, and Cancer Prevention: NCI's Division of Cancer Prevention, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements are sponsoring two PAs to promote clinical and preclinical research to determine how diet and dietary factors, including dietary supplements, impact DNA methylation, histone posttranslational modification, noncoding RNA, and other epigenetic processes involved in cancer prevention and development. - Program Announcements (PARs) on Improving Diet and Physical Activity Assessment: NCI's Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences and Division of Cancer Prevention, along with several other NIH Institutes and Centers, have issued two PARs to encourage innovative research to enhance the quality of measurements of dietary intake and physical activity. Applications may include proposals to develop: novel assessment approaches; better methods to evaluate instruments; assessment tools for culturally diverse populations or various age groups, including children and older adults; improved technology or applications of existing technology; statistical methods to assess or correct for measurement errors or biases, methods to investigate the multidimensionality of diet and physical activity behavior through pattern analysis; or integrated measurement of diet and physical activity along with the environmental context of such behaviors. Special application due dates apply: October 5, 2009; June 5, 2010; February 5, 2011; October 5, 2011; and June 5, 2012. Application due dates for renewal, resubmission, and revision applications are: November 5, 2009; July 5, 2010; March 5, 2011; November 5, 2011; and July 5, 2012. - Request for Information (RFI) for Immune Response Modifiers Pathway Translational Research Opportunities: NCI has issued an RFI to gather information from the scientific community regarding opportunities in cancer immunotherapy and immunoprevention that would benefit from accelerated development through focused funding and coordinated management. This request is part of NCI's new Process to Accelerate Translational Science as recommended by the Translational Research Working Group (TRWG). Responses must be submitted by August 24, 2009.
